The Challenge

To pilot a “Gemini Zapcat” power-boat around the UK to raise funds for two major charities:

  • CLIC Cancer and Leukaemia in Children
  • RNLI  Royal National Lifeboat Institution

It sounds easy doesn’t it?  However...

  • This craft is only 4m long with little to no protection from the elements
  • We will only be stopping to refuel
  • I am disabled, having one arm only.

which is why I am truly...

Why do this?

mr zapcatI had a traumatised accident in 1994 rendering my left arm paralysed after several operations and nerve transplants.  I spent nearly a year on a ward with people suffering from similar outcomes to mine and watched as they “gave up”.
It’s never been in my nature to be ‘disabled’.  I set about rebuilding my life (married with four children) and my business (I specialise in high performance car and powerboat maintenance).
I carried my paralysed arm around and had several nerve operations before I made the decision to have it removed in 2004. It was a tough call but it transformed my life by way of allowing me to become more physically active, despite the unwelcome presence of “Phantom Limb Syndrome” which to this day provides me with constant pain.
As a ‘disabled person’ I started to snowboard with my children and in 2007 and 2008 competed successfully in the National Zapcat Championship Race Series, gaining several podium finishes.

This inspired me to the challenge to raise funds for CLIC Sargent [Cancer and Leukaemia in Children] and the RNLI for “The New Lizard Lifeboat”
